LITTLE ROCK, AR – A high-speed police chase on Interstate 40 late Saturday night ended in tragedy when a 19-year-old driver from Mabelvale lost control and crashed, resulting in his death. The Arkansas State Police (ASP) confirmed that the fatal incident occurred near the Morgan/Maumelle exit around 11 p.m.
The pursuit began when North Little Rock Police spotted a vehicle speeding dangerously with its headlights off, reaching over 120 mph. Officers requested assistance from ASP, and troopers joined the chase near mile marker 145. The driver, identified as John Bruce Martinez, accelerated to 130 mph before attempting to exit the interstate at Exit 142 onto Highway 365.
As Martinez tried to make the turn, he lost control, veering off the road and crashing into several trees. The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle, leaving him fatally injured. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene.
Three passengers, all 17-year-olds from Mabelvale, survived but sustained injuries. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not yet disclosed why Martinez fled from police or why the vehicle was traveling without headlights.
High-speed pursuits pose significant dangers to both law enforcement and the public. While officers must weigh the risks before engaging in a chase, the excessive speed and lack of headlights in this case presented a serious safety threat.
Martinez’s tragic death highlights the consequences of reckless driving and fleeing from law enforcement. Officials urge drivers to comply with traffic laws and pull over when directed to avoid preventable tragedies.
As the investigation continues, authorities are reviewing all factors that contributed to the crash. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
