
SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH – A tragic shooting at the Shaker Heights Public Library on Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of 18-year-old Charles Shanklin. The incident, which unfolded at the library’s Main Branch around 4:45 p.m., has shaken the local community and prompted an ongoing police investigation.
Shaker Heights police responded swiftly to reports of gunfire and found Shanklin suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers attempted CPR before emergency medical personnel arrived and transported him to University Hospitals. Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his identity later that evening.
Authorities detained one person of interest at the scene, but details regarding their identity or potential charges have not been released. Career and Technical Education (CTE) students are also excused from off-campus programs, while all other schools in the district will remain open.
The school district acknowledged the severity of the situation in a public statement, confirming that both past and present Shaker Heights students were involved in the shooting. Officials have not yet announced whether additional security measures or counseling services will be provided.
