A tragic car accident in Martin County, North Carolina, claimed the life of a Williamston woman early Thursday morning. The fatal crash occurred around 8 a.m. on April 10, 2025, at the intersection of Highway 17 and Ralph Taylor Road, leaving the local community stunned and in mourning.
Authorities identified the victim as 38-year-old Samantha S. Shepherd, a resident of Williamston. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Shepherd was driving west on Ralph Taylor Road and attempted to make a left turn onto Highway 17. During the turn, she reportedly failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with a vehicle traveling south on the highway.
The second car was driven by 38-year-old Rakimah Z. Lopez, also of Williamston. The impact was severe, and Shepherd was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Lopez sustained serious injuries and was transported to ECU Medical Center, where officials said she is expected to recover.
Following an investigation, troopers confirmed that no charges will be filed in connection with the crash. The collision was determined to be the result of a failure to yield, and there was no evidence of reckless driving or impairment. Authorities emphasized that while the crash was a tragic accident, it serves as an important reminder about the dangers of intersections on high-speed roads.
As word of the incident spread, many in the Williamston area expressed shock and sorrow. Friends and neighbors remembered Shepherd as a kind and loving woman, and tributes are expected to continue in the days ahead. Her sudden loss has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her, and the community has rallied around her family during this difficult time.
Local officials and residents are also raising concerns about traffic safety at the intersection where the crash occurred. While it does not currently have a traffic light, some are calling for increased signage, lighting, or other safety measures. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to stay alert and yield properly at intersections, especially on major highways like Route 17. The crash remains under review for reporting purposes, and Shepherd’s funeral arrangements have not yet been made public.
