
Delaware State Police have identified the victim of a fatal collision that occurred on Tuesday morning in Christiana as 84-year-old Melvin Jones, a resident of the Newark area. Jones was fatally injured while attempting to turn into University Plaza, according to authorities.
The accident occurred around 6:20 a.m. on Christiana Road. Police reports indicate that Jones had stopped his vehicle in the westbound left turn lane, preparing to turn into University Plaza. When he attempted the turn, his vehicle crossed into the path of an oncoming 2018 Honda Pilot traveling eastbound. The resulting collision left Jones with critical injuries. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Honda Pilot, a 46-year-old woman from Elkton, Maryland, was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two young passengers in her vehicle, ages 8 and 15, were also hospitalized but did not suffer serious harm.
