A suspected break-in early Monday morning in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, ended in tragedy when 33-year-old Kevin Clervil, of East Orange, was fatally shot outside a home on Summit Avenue, police said. Authorities responded to a 911 call around 4:30 a.m., where a resident reported someone trying to force their way into the house.
When officers arrived, they found Clervil lying outside the home with multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency crews rushed him to St. Luke’s Hospital Warren Campus, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Police later confirmed that Clervil and the person who made the 911 call knew each other, but the exact nature of their relationship remains unclear.
Investigators have not said whether Clervil was the alleged intruder or if other factors were involved in the incident. The identity of the shooter has not been released, and no arrests have been made. Police have not yet confirmed if Clervil was armed or posed an immediate threat at the time of the shooting. The motive behind the confrontation is still being determined.
Neighbors were startled by the sudden violence on what is typically a quiet street. One resident said they were awakened by the sound of gunfire and flashing police lights. “We’ve always felt safe here,” the neighbor said. “To wake up to something like this was frightening.” Police remained at the scene for several hours, collecting evidence and speaking to potential witnesses.
Authorities say they are actively investigating the case, including reviewing surveillance footage, examining physical evidence, and conducting interviews. Law enforcement is also working with the county prosecutor’s office to determine whether self-defense laws may apply or if charges should be filed.
The family of Kevin Clervil is now mourning his death and waiting for answers. Loved ones described him as a complicated person but say they want the truth to come out. “Kevin didn’t deserve to die like that,” one relative said. Police urge anyone with information to call the Phillipsburg Police Department at 908-835-2002 as the investigation continues.
