COLUMBIA, S.C. — A 53-year-old man is facing criminal charges following a deadly shooting that occurred outside a Columbia bar early Friday morning, according to the Columbia Police Department. The incident happened in the parking lot of S Bar, located in the 7500 block of Garners Ferry Road, between midnight and 1:00 a.m., while the bar was closing for the night.
Police identified the suspect as Bernard Jackson, Jr., who has been charged with manslaughter and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Officers were already at the scene when a physical altercation broke out among several people. As they attempted to intervene, Jackson allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot another man during the disturbance.
The victim has been identified as 33-year-old Wendell F. Sholar. Emergency responders transported Sholar to a nearby hospital, but sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. The Columbia Police Department has not released details on what started the fight or whether Jackson and Sholar knew each other prior to the altercation.
Jackson was immediately taken into custody at the scene and later questioned by detectives. He was formally charged Friday afternoon and is currently being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center. Authorities have not stated whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
This tragic incident has left many community members shaken, especially as it unfolded in the presence of police officers. While no other injuries were reported, officials say the situation could have become even more dangerous had officers not been on the scene. The Columbia Police Department is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward.
Investigators are also encouraging people to share any video footage or tips through Crimestoppers, where information can be submitted anonymously. As police continue to gather evidence, they are working to determine exactly what led to the fatal shooting and whether further action will be taken. The Columbia Police Department says their goal is to bring clarity to the incident and justice to those affected by the loss of life.
