KERN COUNTY, Calif. — Authorities have identified the man who died in a violent crash earlier this week on Interstate 5 as 75-year-old Kent Trochelman of Owosso, Michigan, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office. The deadly incident occurred on the evening of Monday, June 2, 2025, along the southbound lanes of I-5, just south of Highway 46.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene around 6:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a single-vehicle accident. According to preliminary findings by CHP investigators, Trochelman had been driving a 2018 Jeep Compass at a high rate of speed when, for unknown reasons, he suddenly swerved to the right. The vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the dirt shoulder.
The out-of-control Jeep continued traveling southwest, striking shrubs, trees, and fencing before finally coming to a stop in a dry canal west of the freeway. The force of the impact and the vehicle’s erratic path through the terrain suggested a loss of control prior to the crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly but found Trochelman unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that Trochelman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries. The California Highway Patrol also indicated that alcohol appears to have been a factor in the collision, although toxicology results are still pending to confirm that assessment.
Investigators are continuing to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the crash. No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported. CHP officers remain focused on determining whether any mechanical issues, health concerns, or external factors might have played a role.
The fatal accident has served as a stark reminder of the importance of seatbelt use and responsible driving practices, particularly at high speeds. As the investigation moves forward, CHP officials are urging drivers to stay alert, wear seatbelts, and never drive under the influence.
Friends and family of Kent Trochelman are now mourning his loss, as authorities work to bring clarity to the tragic circumstances of his final moments. Further updates from the CHP and coroner’s office are expected in the coming days.
