LEON COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has announced progress in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred late Sunday night in Leon County. A person of interest has been identified, and the vehicle believed to have been involved in the collision has been recovered. Authorities, however, have not released the identity of the individual or specific details about the vehicle’s discovery.
The deadly crash happened near the intersection of Highway 20 and Jay Bird Lane. Initial reports from investigators pointed to a white, older-model SUV as the suspect vehicle. After several days of searching and gathering leads, FHP confirmed on Thursday that the vehicle has been located. It remains unclear where or in what condition the vehicle was found, or whether it was in possession of the person of interest.
The victim, 49-year-old Teresa Stitely, was a well-known and cherished member of the Fort Braden community. Affectionately referred to as “Ms. Teresa,” she was frequently seen riding her bicycle along Highway 20. Her regular rides became a familiar sight to neighbors, who now mourn her sudden and tragic death. Many have shared their grief and disbelief over losing someone who brought a quiet, comforting presence to their daily lives.
Residents like Cynthia Giddens expressed sorrow over the loss, describing Stitely as kind and consistent, someone who always waved and smiled during her bike rides. “It just doesn’t feel real,” Giddens said. “She was such a gentle spirit, and to think someone hit her and didn’t stop is devastating.”
FHP’s Traffic Homicide Unit is continuing its investigation, reviewing evidence collected at the scene and conducting forensic analysis on the recovered vehicle. Toxicology reports, surveillance footage, and witness statements are being examined to establish the timeline and determine accountability. At this time, no arrests have been made, and FHP has not confirmed whether charges will be filed.
Authorities are urging anyone with additional information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and investigators hope community input will help bring resolution. As Fort Braden residents come to terms with the loss of Ms. Teresa, they remain hopeful that justice will be served in her memory.
