Kings Mountain, NC – A relaxing afternoon at Moss Lake turned tragic on Saturday after a 46-year-old man from Lattimore drowned near Highland Circle. The victim, identified as William James Corn Jr., was reported missing in the water just before 5 p.m., prompting a swift emergency response from Kings Mountain police and rescue teams.
Authorities said the call came in around 4:55 p.m., reporting that a man had gone underwater and failed to resurface. Within minutes, water rescue crews arrived at the scene and launched a search operation. Divers and responders searched the area tirelessly, and Corn was located at approximately 5:55 p.m., about 45 minutes after the search began.
Emergency responders immediately performed life-saving measures at the shoreline in an effort to revive him. Corn was then rushed to a nearby hospital in Shelby, where medical staff continued resuscitation efforts. Sadly, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, despite all efforts made by both rescue crews and hospital personnel.
At this time, officials have not disclosed what Corn was doing before the drowning occurred. It is unclear whether he had been swimming, boating, or involved in another water activity. Investigators have also not released any information suggesting foul play, though they are still working to determine the exact cause of the incident. Medical conditions, water conditions, or other contributing factors have not yet been ruled out.
The drowning has raised concerns as the summer season kicks off and more people head to lakes and rivers for recreation. Local officials are urging the public to use caution while near the water, especially in areas where depths vary and currents may be stronger than they appear. Wearing life jackets and remaining aware of your surroundings can significantly reduce the risk of drowning.
