WICHITA COUNTY, KS — A tragic crash in Wichita County, Kansas, claimed the life of a 54-year-old man early Sunday morning. Authorities confirmed that Walter J. Waldren, a resident of Tribune, was killed when his pickup truck overturned along K-96 highway, about six miles west of Leoti.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at 12:32 a.m. on westbound K-96. Waldren was driving a 1980 Ford F-350 pickup truck when he veered off the roadway and into the north ditch. Attempting to correct his path, he overcompensated, causing the truck to swerve back onto the highway before entering the south ditch. The vehicle then spun counterclockwise before overturning.
Waldren, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was ejected from the truck during the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Officials confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Authorities are investigating the crash to determine if speed, fatigue, or other factors contributed to the accident. While it is unclear what caused Waldren to lose control, officials continue to stress the importance of seatbelt use, which could have potentially prevented the ejection.
The loss of Walter J. Waldren has deeply affected the Tribune and Wichita County communities. Friends and family are remembering him as a cherished member of the community whose life was tragically cut short.
As the investigation continues, local officials urge drivers to remain cautious, wear seatbelts, and stay alert to prevent similar tragedies on the road. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of safe driving practices and the need for vigilance behind the wheel.
Further updates will be provided as more details emerge from the ongoing investigation. The community is coming together to support Waldren’s family during this difficult time.
