GREER, S.C. — Authorities in South Carolina are investigating the death of a Georgia woman who was struck by a vehicle early Friday morning near Riverside High School in Greer. According to the Greer Police Department, 35-year-old Sonia Coronado of Gainesville, Georgia, was hit by a silver KIA Sorento near the intersection of Hammet Bridge Road and East Suber Road. The incident occurred around 3:44 a.m. as the vehicle was traveling along Hammet Bridge Road in front of the high school.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office pronounced Coronado dead at 3:52 a.m. An autopsy determined that she died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso. Authorities have not publicly identified the driver of the KIA Sorento, who remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
The coroner’s office ruled Coronado’s death as an accident, but law enforcement officials are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. It remains unclear how Coronado came to be in the roadway at that hour, and investigators are working to gather more information about the events leading up to the crash.
