BREAUX BRIDGE, LA — A tragic accident claimed the life of a Breaux Bridge man early Thursday morning after his car collided head-on with a school bus on Poche Bridge Road. The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the fatal crash occurred shortly after 7 a.m. in the 1000 block of the commonly traveled roadway.
According to Sheriff Becket Breaux, deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a two-vehicle collision involving a school bus. Upon arrival, they found a severely damaged 2011 Hyundai Elantra and a school bus from the St. Martin Parish School District. Preliminary investigation suggests the Hyundai, traveling northbound, veered across the center line and struck the southbound bus head-on.
The driver of the Hyundai, identified as 38-year-old Arthur St. Amant Joubert of Breaux Bridge, was critically injured and transported to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts by emergency personnel, Joubert succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported. The bus was carrying students at the time of the crash, but officials stated that neither the driver nor the students sustained injuries. School officials have offered counseling services to any students or staff emotionally impacted by the accident.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Deputies are working to determine whether distraction, fatigue, a medical event, or another factor led to Joubert crossing into oncoming traffic. Investigators are also reviewing road conditions, vehicle speeds, and possible mechanical issues.
