BRIMFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH — A 77-year-old Kent man died Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while crossing State Route 43, prompting renewed calls for pedestrian safety improvements along the dangerous corridor. Arthur Jones was attempting to cross the unlit roadway around 10:30 p.m. when a southbound motorist hit him, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred in a commercial area where the speed limit transitions abruptly from 60 mph to 55 mph. Investigators noted the absence of nearby crosswalks or adequate street lighting as potential contributing factors. The driver, who remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, has not been charged pending completion of the investigation.
Jones was a familiar sight in the neighborhood, often walking to a nearby convenience store after dark. Neighbors reported he typically carried a flashlight for visibility. “This stretch has always been treacherous for pedestrians,” said local resident Margaret Wilkes. “We’ve been begging for safety improvements for years.”
The Portage County Engineer’s Office confirmed plans to review the crash site for potential safety upgrades. Data shows this marks the third pedestrian fatality along this half-mile section of SR-43 since 2023. Community leaders are demanding immediate installation of street lights, marked crosswalks, and reduced speed limits near residential areas.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s crash reconstruction team spent Saturday documenting skid marks and measuring visibility conditions. Investigators are determining whether the victim’s dark clothing, vehicle speed, or driver distraction played roles in the tragedy. No alcohol or drug impairment is suspected.
Funeral arrangements for Jones are being handled by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home. As the Kent community mourns the loss of a beloved neighbor, officials urge pedestrians to wear reflective gear and drivers to exercise extreme caution on poorly-lit roadways, especially during evening hours.
