CLARKE COUNTY, Ala. — A heartbreaking scene unfolded in Clarke County early Sunday morning as three people were found dead and a young child was left critically injured following a suspected murder-suicide in the Whatley community. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the devastating incident, which occurred on April 6 at a residence along Old Line Road, west of Grove Hill.
Deputies responded to the home around 8:00 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless bodies of an adult male, 35-year-old Ashley Howell, and her young child, Jayden Howell. A second child, identified as Jayln Howell, was also found at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
In a press briefing, Clarke County Sheriff DeWayne Smith described the incident as a “heartbreaking and senseless tragedy.” Preliminary findings suggest the adult male fatally shot Howell and her two children before turning the gun on himself. The identity of the male suspect has not yet been released pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.
Sheriff Smith emphasized that the case appears to be domestic violence-related and added that investigators are working to establish a clear timeline and motive. Authorities are interviewing potential witnesses and collecting evidence to confirm the series of events that led to the violence.
“This is something no community should ever have to experience,” Sheriff Smith said. “Our hearts go out to the family members and everyone affected by this terrible loss.”
The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office has asked the public to respect the privacy of the surviving family and is urging anyone with information to contact their office. While details remain limited, the case has stirred strong emotions throughout the local area, prompting renewed calls for greater attention to domestic violence and mental health support.
As the investigation continues, officials say more information will be released when available. The focus remains on supporting the surviving child’s recovery and uncovering the full circumstances behind this tragic event.
