GULFPORT, Miss. — A tragic multi-vehicle collision in Gulfport claimed the life of a 40-year-old Ocean Springs man on Wednesday evening. Braden Harper was identified as the victim in the fatal crash involving his motorcycle and three other vehicles. The incident occurred at approximately 5:58 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 49 and Dedeaux Road, according to Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer.
Authorities say Harper was riding his newly purchased motorcycle northbound on Highway 49 when he struck a van that was crossing the road. The force of the impact pushed the van into two other vehicles that were waiting in a turn lane on Dedeaux Road. Emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene, but Harper suffered fatal blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the location.
The driver and passenger inside the van sustained serious injuries but are expected to survive. They were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. No injuries were reported from occupants of the other two vehicles involved. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether any additional factors contributed.
According to the coroner, Harper had purchased the motorcycle earlier that same day. It remains unclear how long he had been riding before the crash occurred. Officials have not confirmed whether speed, distraction, or mechanical issues may have played a role in the incident.
Traffic at the busy intersection was severely impacted for several hours as first responders and investigators worked to clear the scene and gather evidence. The Gulfport Police Department, along with traffic reconstruction experts, is continuing to investigate the crash. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses and witness statements are being reviewed.
The sudden loss of Braden Harper has left friends and family in shock. Known in the Ocean Springs community for his friendly demeanor and love for motorcycles, Harper’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief on social media. As the investigation continues, loved ones are remembering him for his adventurous spirit and kind heart.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area to contact Gulfport Police. The department aims to piece together a complete picture of the moments leading up to the collision and determine whether any charges are warranted.
