MURRAY, UT — A woman driving a stolen vehicle died in a crash Thursday night, May 29, after fleeing from police in an incident that ended in tragedy near the intersection of 4800 South and 500 West. Authorities have identified the driver as 35-year-old Caysee Rebolloso of Salt Lake City.
The ordeal began around 9:30 p.m. when Taylorsville police spotted Rebolloso behind the wheel of a vehicle that had been reported stolen. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Rebolloso refused to pull over and fled the area. In accordance with department policy aimed at reducing risk to the public, police did not pursue the vehicle on the ground.
Instead, the Utah Department of Public Safety deployed a helicopter to track the suspect from the air. Officers coordinated remotely as Rebolloso sped through city streets, attempting to evade capture. To safely stop the vehicle, officers placed spike strips along 500 West, which Rebolloso drove over, damaging her tires. Despite the damage, she continued driving.
Moments later, Rebolloso’s vehicle collided with two other cars at the busy Murray intersection. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Two other individuals in the vehicles she struck were also hospitalized, though their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.
The Taylorsville Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including how Rebolloso came into possession of the stolen vehicle and whether additional factors, such as impaired driving, played a role. No information has been released regarding her criminal history or any possible accomplices.
Authorities say this case highlights the risks suspects pose to the public when they flee from law enforcement. Although officers avoided a direct chase in favor of aerial monitoring and tire deflation devices, the incident still ended in a deadly collision.
Police have expressed sympathy for all those affected and are conducting a review of the response to determine if any procedural changes are necessary. For now, the investigation remains ongoing, and the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of another high-speed attempt to avoid arrest that ended in loss and injury.
