Corydon, USA – A man armed with a machete was fatally shot by a sheriff’s deputy following a family disturbance call in Corydon on Monday night. The tragic incident occurred on the 100 block of Eighth Street, where deputies had been sent to address a report of a domestic dispute involving family members. This serious event has prompted an investigation by the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office.
Upon arriving at the scene, a sheriff’s deputy was immediately confronted by a man later identified as Charles Powell Jr. According to officials, Powell was clearly armed with a machete, posing an immediate threat. The deputy reacted quickly to the dangerous situation.
A press release from the Sheriff’s Office stated that the deputy gave multiple clear commands, ordering Powell to stop moving and to drop the weapon. However, Powell reportedly ignored these verbal warnings and continued to advance toward the deputy while still holding the machete in a threatening manner.
In an effort to avoid using deadly force, the deputy first deployed a Taser, a less-lethal weapon designed to incapacitate. Despite being hit by the Taser, Powell reportedly kept moving aggressively toward the deputy. With the threat still coming closer, the deputy then had no choice but to use his service firearm, striking Powell.
Medical help was called to the scene right away, and Powell was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he later passed away from his injuries. The incident remains under active investigation, and the identity of the deputy involved has not yet been released. No further details about the nature of the initial family disturbance have been provided.
Law enforcement officials are thoroughly reviewing all aspects of the case, including footage from body cameras worn by officers and statements from any eyewitnesses, to understand the full sequence of events. Incidents where deadly force is used are taken very seriously, and standard procedures are being followed to ensure a complete and open review. This event has understandably shaken the Corydon community, and authorities are asking anyone with additional information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
