SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have clarified the circumstances surrounding a deadly crash on Interstate 85 that occurred early Tuesday morning, stating it was not a hit-and-run as initially reported.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) responded to the incident shortly after midnight on April 9, in the northbound lanes near mile marker 59 in Spartanburg County. According to the SCHP, both a moped and a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV were traveling north when the SUV collided with the moped.
The rider of the moped, 35-year-old David Joseph Moreno of Greenwood, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity. Early statements from law enforcement described the crash as a hit-and-run, leading officials to ask the public for help in identifying the driver of the SUV. However, by Wednesday morning, the Highway Patrol issued an update correcting that information.
Authorities now report that five vehicles struck either the moped or Moreno after the initial impact—but all five drivers remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. This clarification led officials to withdraw their request for public assistance, confirming that no one fled the scene.
Despite the correction, the incident remains under active investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Officials are continuing to review evidence and interview those involved to determine the precise sequence of events.
The tragic loss of David Moreno has prompted an outpouring of condolences from his hometown of Greenwood and surrounding communities. His sudden death serves as a reminder of the risks that moped and motorcycle riders face, especially on high-speed interstates during low-visibility hours.
As the investigation continues, SCHP has not released any additional information regarding potential charges or contributing factors in the crash. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
