GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. — A deadly crash involving a dump truck late Sunday night has claimed the life of a North Carolina man on Interstate 385 in Greenville County. Authorities have identified the victim as 58-year-old David Mather Whitehead Sr. of High Point, North Carolina.
The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on the southbound side of I-385 near Exit 37, which leads to Roper Mountain Road. According to officials, emergency services were dispatched quickly after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle crash. Upon arrival, first responders discovered that one of the vehicles involved was a dump truck, which had sustained significant damage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that both vehicles were traveling southbound at the time of the crash, but officials have not yet shared specific details on the second vehicle or how the collision unfolded. The dump truck driver, later identified as Whitehead, was found critically injured at the scene and was immediately transported to Greenville Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Whitehead succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Monday. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity and notified his family. No information has been released regarding the condition of the other vehicle’s occupants or whether additional injuries occurred.
