JAMESPORT, N.Y. — A quiet community was rocked Wednesday evening after a husband and wife were found dead in what police say was a murder-suicide inside their Jamesport home. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, 62-year-old Edward Crohan fatally shot his wife, 63-year-old Stephanie Crohan, before taking his own life.
Riverhead Town Police officers responded to the couple’s residence on Lagoon Court around 8:30 p.m. for a welfare check. Upon entering the home, officers discovered both Edward and Stephanie Crohan deceased from gunshot wounds. The scene was secured and turned over to the Suffolk County Homicide Squad for further investigation.
Authorities have determined that Edward Crohan was the shooter in this tragic domestic incident. The motive behind the violence has not been disclosed, and police have not indicated whether there were any prior reports of domestic trouble involving the couple. The investigation remains active, and officials are working to piece together the events leading up to the deadly encounter.
Public records indicate that Edward Crohan was a retired officer from the Southampton Police Department. His LinkedIn profile and pension information confirm years of service in law enforcement before his retirement. Stephanie Crohan was also retired, reportedly drawing pension benefits through the New York State Police and Fire Retirement System after a long career with Suffolk County.
The shocking nature of the murder-suicide has left neighbors and the broader Jamesport community in disbelief. Friends and former colleagues of the couple expressed sorrow and confusion over the tragedy, describing them as quiet, longtime residents. Many are now left struggling to understand how such a devastating act could have occurred behind closed doors.
Suffolk County detectives are continuing their investigation and urge anyone with information related to the case to contact the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392. At this time, no additional details have been released regarding funeral arrangements or whether any public memorial will be held. Authorities have not indicated if a note was found or if mental health concerns played a role. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of two lives and reflects on the importance of addressing domestic violence and mental health concerns before they lead to tragedy.
