HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A tragic act of domestic violence has left three people dead, including a 10-year-old girl, in what authorities are calling a double murder-suicide in Mercer County. The incident unfolded early Thursday morning on Henry Street in Hamilton Township, prompting a swift response from local police.
Around 4 a.m., officers arrived at the scene after receiving a 911 call and discovered the bodies of Claribel Torres, her daughter Evangelina Velasquez, and Torres’ boyfriend, Fernando Abel. According to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, all three had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Investigators believe Abel shot Torres and her daughter before turning the gun on himself.
“This is a heartbreaking tragedy that has shaken our entire community,” said Hamilton Township Mayor Jeff Martin. “We grieve for the loss of these lives, especially a young child with her future ahead of her. Our thoughts are with their loved ones.” The mayor also expressed appreciation for local law enforcement and school officials for their efforts in providing support services.
Evangelina Velasquez was a student in the Hamilton Township School District. School officials have mobilized crisis counselors to support her classmates and teachers as they cope with the loss. The sudden death of the young girl has had a deep impact on the community, prompting messages of sympathy and sadness from neighbors and friends.
Authorities have confirmed that the case is being investigated as a domestic violence-related murder-suicide. Prosecutor Janetta Marbrey emphasized that while the investigation is still ongoing, no other individuals are believed to be involved. Officials are urging anyone experiencing domestic abuse or concerned about someone’s safety to seek help immediately.
Support resources have been made available, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which offers 24/7 confidential assistance at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or online at thehotline.org. Community leaders are encouraging residents to remain vigilant, offer support to those at risk, and never ignore signs of abuse.
Details about funeral services and opportunities for community support are expected in the coming days. Meanwhile, the community continues to grapple with the devastating loss of a mother and child in an act of violence that could have been prevented.
