KILLEEN, Texas — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 19-year-old man early Wednesday morning in a residential neighborhood. The victim, identified as Gabriel Lee Garza, was found with multiple gunshot wounds on the 2900 block of Cantabrian Drive just before 2 a.m. on May 28.
Killeen police responded to reports of a shooting at 1:42 a.m. and discovered Garza critically injured at the scene. Emergency responders administered medical aid and transported him to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 6:29 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Nicola James. An autopsy will be conducted at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas to determine the official cause of death.
Investigators say Garza had arranged to meet with a small group of individuals outside the residence where the shooting occurred. At some point during the meeting, shots were fired, striking Garza multiple times. Police believe the people involved were not strangers to the victim and suspect a prior relationship may have played a role, though no motive has been confirmed.
No arrests have been made, and authorities have not released descriptions of potential suspects. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, gathering evidence, and interviewing witnesses in an effort to identify those responsible. Police have urged anyone with information to contact the Killeen Police Department or Bell County Crime Stoppers.
The sudden loss has devastated Garza’s friends and family, many of whom have turned to social media to share memories and tributes. Described as kind-hearted and friendly, Garza’s death has left the community mourning yet another life lost to gun violence. Vigils and memorials are being planned in his honor.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about youth violence in Killeen. Community leaders are calling for greater efforts in crime prevention, conflict resolution, and outreach to young people. As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are urging patience and cooperation from the public, hoping community support will help bring justice for Gabriel Garza and his loved ones.
