SCARBOROUGH, Maine — A tragic wrong-way crash on a Maine highway claimed the life of an elderly driver Friday morning. Authorities have identified the victim as 86-year-old George Vandenburgh of Portland, who was traveling in the wrong direction when his vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer, resulting in his death at the scene.
Maine State Police reported that Vandenburgh’s car was first spotted around 6 a.m., heading the wrong way on the Maine Turnpike in Scarborough. The vehicle continued onto Interstate 295, passing through toll booths in South Portland before the fatal crash occurred near Exit 4. Vandenburgh’s northbound vehicle collided head-on with a southbound tractor-trailer, causing significant damage to both vehicles.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Vandenburgh did not survive the crash. The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to Maine Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The crash caused major traffic disruptions, leading to the closure of I-295 in both directions for several hours while authorities investigated the scene.
Officials have not yet determined why Vandenburgh was driving the wrong way. The Maine State Police are continuing their investigation, examining factors such as potential medical issues, driver error, or other contributing circumstances. Authorities are also reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the crash.
The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Friends and family remember Vandenburgh as a kind and respected member of the Portland community. “George was a wonderful man who will be deeply missed,” said a neighbor. “This is such a heartbreaking loss.”
This crash serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving and the importance of road safety. Authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant, especially on highways, and to report any suspicious or dangerous driving behavior immediately.
As the investigation continues, the community is rallying around Vandenburgh’s family, offering support and condolences during this difficult time. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
