ATLANTA, GA — A vibrant Alabama State University student with a bright future was tragically killed in a shooting that authorities are still working to understand. Ginnia Grimes, 21, was fatally shot while riding in a vehicle on Interstate 85, according to Montgomery County authorities.
Grimes was a junior majoring in criminal justice and a well-loved member of ASU’s Honey Beez Dance Team. Known for her charisma, energy, and determination, she had become a beloved figure on campus and in her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.
A 2021 graduate of Mays High School, Grimes first caught the public eye when a video of her high school dance performance went viral. The footage, later featured on Access Hollywood, led to her adopting the stage names “Strawberry” and “Purple Doll,” and sparked her dream of becoming a famous performer.
Despite the challenges of young motherhood—she gave birth to her son, Rogers McCloud III, in 2024—Grimes returned to school with a renewed sense of purpose. She was committed to building a promising future for herself and her son, all while continuing to dance and inspire those around her.
Authorities have not released many details, but Grimes’ family said she was riding in a car with a friend when a firearm discharged inside the vehicle. It’s unclear whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, and the case remains under active investigation.
The loss has devastated both the Alabama State community and those who knew Grimes back in Atlanta. Tributes have poured in from classmates, teachers, and friends, all describing her as a radiant presence who left a lasting impression wherever she went.
Montgomery County investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue working to determine what happened. As of now, no charges have been announced, and no suspects have been publicly named.
Further updates are expected as the investigation develops. In the meantime, Grimes’ family, friends, and university are mourning the loss of a young woman whose life was filled with promise, talent, and love.
