WEST VALLEY CITY, UT — A festive evening turned tragic on Sunday night when gunfire erupted at a community event in Centennial Park, leaving three people dead, including an infant. The West Valley City Police Department has identified two of the victims as 41-year-old Fnu Reena and 18-year-old Hassan Lugundi. The third victim, an 8-month-old baby, has not been publicly named.
The shooting happened around 9:20 p.m. during WestFest, an annual festival that typically draws large crowds for music, food, and family activities. According to authorities, a 16-year-old boy opened fire in what they described as a targeted attack on Lugundi. Reena and the baby were struck by stray bullets and killed. Officials confirmed the baby was not related to Reena and that neither was involved in the conflict.
Police officers quickly responded to the scene and apprehended the teen suspect. During the confrontation, one officer discharged their weapon, but no one else was injured in that exchange, and the suspect was not struck. The motive appears to be connected to a prior altercation involving Lugundi, although details remain limited.
Two additional people were injured in the chaos that followed the shooting. One was a pregnant woman who was hurt while trying to escape the scene. She was transported to the hospital for treatment, and authorities have not disclosed the extent of her injuries. Officials have not reported any other serious injuries.
The sudden violence shocked attendees and disrupted what was meant to be a joyful evening. Families, children, and vendors were forced to flee the area in panic. Law enforcement remained at the park overnight, working to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are seeking any videos or tips from the public that could aid in the case.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the charges the teen suspect will face, but officials say he remains in custody. As the community mourns the heartbreaking loss of innocent lives, local leaders and residents are calling for unity and peace. The tragedy has left West Valley City grieving — particularly over the death of a baby and a woman who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
