KILLEEN, Texas — A Tuesday evening shooting on Griffith Loop turned fatal, claiming the life of 52-year-old Jahid Hombre Black and injuring three others—two children and a young adult. The Killeen Police Department responded to the scene at 6:48 p.m. after reports of gunfire, finding Black suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson at 7:23 p.m.
The violence unfolded when Black and the other victims—a 10-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and an 18-year-old male—stopped at the suspect’s residence. Authorities say a brief conversation occurred before a 16-year-old male opened fire on their vehicle. As Black attempted to drive away, the vehicle crashed two blocks from the scene. The two children sustained gunshot wounds, while the 18-year-old was injured in the crash. All three were hospitalized, with their current conditions undisclosed.
Police took the teenage suspect into custody at the scene and transported him to the Bell County Juvenile Detention Center. Investigators confirmed the parties were acquainted and deemed the shooting an isolated incident, with no ongoing threat to the public. The incident prompted the precautionary evacuation of a middle school track meet at nearby Shoemaker High School, though Killeen ISD Superintendent Jo Ann Fey clarified the shooting occurred off campus.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not released details about potential charges or court proceedings. The case has rattled the community, with neighbors expressing shock over the brazen violence involving minors.
