POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Authorities in Pompano Beach are investigating a devastating murder-suicide that left three people dead in the Leisureville retirement community. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) responded to a welfare check at a residence near the 300 block of South Golf Boulevard on Wednesday evening, uncovering a scene of unimaginable tragedy.
Deputies arrived at the home around 7 p.m. after concerns were raised about the residents’ well-being. An overflowing mailbox and two vehicles parked in the driveway suggested the occupants had not left the property for some time. Upon entering the home, officers discovered three individuals deceased, all with apparent gunshot wounds. On Thursday, officials identified the shooter as 80-year-old James Sheridan. Investigators believe Sheridan fatally shot a man and a woman before taking his own life.
The identities of the two victims have not yet been released, but neighbors reported that a family had been living in the home. Residents described the household as quiet and reclusive, with little interaction with the community. Lauren Goltz, a neighbor, shared her observations, saying, “They were very quiet people. We saw them coming and going, just a wave. Nobody really knew them. They lived here renting for about a year, but they were like strangers.”
The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, leaving the community in shock and searching for answers. Authorities are working to piece together the events that culminated in the tragic incident, including potential motives or underlying tensions. The BSO has not yet released further details but has assured the public that the investigation is ongoing.
The Leisureville retirement community, known for its peaceful atmosphere, has been deeply affected by the incident. Neighbors expressed their sorrow and disbelief, struggling to comprehend how such violence could occur in their close-knit neighborhood. “This is a quiet, safe place. Things like this just don’t happen here,” said one resident.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The BSO is committed to providing answers to the victims’ families and the community as they grapple with this heartbreaking loss.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and community support, particularly among older adults. Counseling and support services are being made available to residents as they process the shock and grief caused by the incident.
