A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday evening in Columbia during a drug deal that turned deadly. The Richland County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jayson R. Cooke, a Columbia resident. The tragic incident happened near the intersection of Percival Road and Quail Run Lane just after 7:00 p.m.
Deputies from the Richland County Sheriff’s Department responded to calls of gunfire and a vehicle crash. When they arrived, they found a silver Toyota that had slammed into a wall. Inside, they discovered Cooke, who had been shot and was already dead. Investigators believe the shooting happened before the crash, and that Cooke may have lost control of the car due to his injuries and possible brake failure.
As deputies secured the area, they received reports that four people had been seen fleeing on foot after the gunfire. K9 units were deployed, and the trail led officers to a mobile home park located at 700 Percival Road. With help from the department’s Special Response Team, the mobile home was surrounded. All four suspects eventually surrendered peacefully to law enforcement.
Deputies soon determined that the shooting occurred during a drug transaction that escalated into violence. Four individuals have been arrested and charged in connection with Cooke’s death. Makenzie Shine, 20, and Sa’riya Green, 18, have been charged with murder. Elon Williams, 17, was charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A 15-year-old suspect faces the same charges.
Authorities have not released more information about what led up to the failed drug deal or how each suspect was involved. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says the investigation is still active. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and determine whether more charges will be filed.
This heartbreaking case is a reminder of the dangers that come with drugs and illegal weapons—especially among young people. Local leaders and law enforcement officials are urging parents and community members to stay involved in teens’ lives, report suspicious activity, and seek help if they suspect someone is in danger. As the investigation continues, the Sheriff’s Department and Coroner’s Office say they are committed to getting justice for Jayson Cooke and his loved ones.
