WICHITA, KS – A tragic two-vehicle crash on Interstate 135 early Tuesday morning claimed the life of a 39-year-old man, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP). The accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. on the northbound side of I-135 near the exit ramp to North Hydraulic Avenue.
Authorities reported that Jeffrey T. Galbreath of Wichita was driving a 2006 Pontiac Torrent SUV northbound when he attempted to exit toward Hydraulic Avenue. His vehicle rear-ended a 2014 Hyundai Elantra, causing the SUV to veer back onto the highway. Galbreath’s vehicle then crossed multiple lanes before striking the inside barrier wall. The SUV rebounded into traffic and ultimately crashed into an outer barrier wall in a construction zone, where it came to a final stop.
The driver of the Hyundai, 29-year-old Pamela V. Jean Reyes, also of Wichita, was able to move her vehicle to the shoulder after the crash. Authorities confirmed that she was not injured in the incident.
Emergency responders pronounced Galbreath dead at the scene. KHP noted that both drivers had been wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the factors that contributed to the collision. Officials have not yet released any further details regarding potential road conditions, speed, or other contributing elements.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge drivers to remain cautious, particularly in construction zones where lane shifts and barriers can present additional hazards. Further updates may be provided as officials review evidence from the scene.
