LAREDO, Texas — A 56-year-old man has died following a serious forklift accident at a Laredo dock, according to the Laredo Police Department. The victim, identified as Jose Roberto Martinez, passed away at the hospital on Friday, one day after sustaining critical injuries during the workplace incident.
The accident occurred on Thursday, April 3, at 611 Union Pacific. Police say Martinez was operating a forklift when he fell from the dock. During the fall, the heavy machinery toppled over and landed on his left ankle and leg, trapping him underneath.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene. When they arrived, they found Martinez conscious and able to speak despite his injuries. Crews worked swiftly to free him from beneath the forklift before transporting him to Doctors Hospital Main for urgent medical care.
Initially, there was hope that Martinez would survive his injuries, as he remained alert during the rescue. However, his condition worsened, and he succumbed to his injuries the following day. His death has prompted an active investigation by local authorities.
Officials are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine whether any safety violations or mechanical issues contributed to the fatal accident. The Laredo Police Department has not yet released further details about the ongoing investigation.
Martinez’s death marks a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with industrial and dockyard work. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
