
MISSION HILLS, LOS ANGELES — A 50-year-old man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run accident Sunday night while crossing the street in Mission Hills, leaving the community in shock. The incident occurred at around 9:25 p.m. on Devonshire Street, just east of Woodman Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).
The victim, identified as Jesus Portillo, a resident of North Hills, was crossing the street outside of the designated crosswalk when a black SUV struck him. The force of the collision caused severe injuries, and despite the rapid response from emergency personnel, Portillo was declared dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported seeing the SUV involved in the crash, but the driver did not stop to provide assistance or remain at the scene, fleeing immediately. As of now, LAPD officials have not released a description of the suspect vehicle or its driver. The department has launched an investigation, seeking any clues that might lead to the identification of the responsible party.
LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division is handling the case and is actively asking for public assistance. Detectives are urging anyone who may have witnessed the accident or who has any information about the driver to come forward. The authorities are also requesting access to any nearby surveillance footage or dashcam videos that could shed light on the incident.
Portillo’s tragic death has left his family devastated and the local community in mourning. Residents in the area have expressed concern over pedestrian safety, particularly along busy streets like Devonshire. With the incident happening at night, many are calling for increased awareness of pedestrian rights of way and better enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As of Monday, police have not yet apprehended the suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing.
