PORTSMOUTH, OH — A Wednesday afternoon motorcycle accident claimed the life of 48-year-old Joshua Lee Maxie, the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed. The fatal crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. near milepost 14 on state Route 73, leaving the local community in mourning.
Investigators reported Maxie was traveling westbound when he lost control of his motorcycle, veering left off the roadway before striking a guardrail. Emergency crews rushed the Portsmouth resident to Southern Ohio Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The impact’s severity left little chance for survival, authorities noted.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Portsmouth post continues to investigate potential contributing factors, including road conditions, speed, and mechanical issues. No other vehicles were involved in the single-vehicle crash. Troopers are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby properties and seeking witnesses who may have seen Maxie’s final moments on the road.
Friends remembered Maxie as an experienced rider who loved exploring southern Ohio’s scenic routes. “Josh lived for the freedom of riding,” said longtime friend Michael Brewer. “He knew these roads better than anyone.” The crash marks the third fatal motorcycle accident in Scioto County this year.
As the investigation continues, authorities remind motorists to share the road cautiously with motorcycles, especially as warmer weather brings more riders onto highways. The Ohio State Highway Patrol urges anyone with information about the crash to contact the Portsmouth post at (740) 354-2889.
A memorial ride in Maxie’s honor is being organized by local riding clubs, with proceeds benefiting his family. Funeral arrangements are pending at Phillips Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
