PAULDING COUNTY, OH — June 8, 2025 — A heartbreaking car crash early Sunday morning claimed the life of 17-year-old Kaiya Klopfenstein, a vibrant and beloved teen from Defiance, Ohio. Known for her warm personality and outstanding talent in junior billiards, Kaiya’s sudden death has left her community in deep sorrow.
The fatal crash occurred just after 1:00 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 133 and State Route 111. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post, the vehicle was being driven by 18-year-old Tyson Ward of Oakwood. Ward reportedly failed to stop at the intersection, causing the vehicle to run off the road and crash into a tree. Kaiya, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ward suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Authorities are still investigating what led to the crash. Meanwhile, the community is mourning the loss of a young woman described as “a beautiful soul with a playful innocence.” Kaiya’s passion for billiards earned her recognition across the state. She was a standout member of the junior leagues for five years, admired for her sportsmanship and kindness just as much as for her skill.
Tributes have poured in from across the country. J & S Electronics Pool Leagues & Events remembered her as “a treasure to watch” and “a light in a dark world.” The Junior International Championship family also expressed their grief, calling her a fierce competitor who “lit up every room she walked into.”
Kaiya is survived by her parents, Brett and Justine, and her siblings, Isaiah and Gracelynn. The family has received an outpouring of love from friends, teammates, coaches, and mentors who were touched by her life and character. Many described her as not just a great athlete, but an extraordinary human being.
Grief counselors and local support services have been made available to classmates and those struggling to process the loss. The community is urged to lean on one another and seek help if needed.
As one tribute movingly said, “Please—hug your people. Tell them you love them. Tomorrow is never promised.”
Kaiya Klopfenstein will be remembered for her joy, heart, and the lasting light she brought to all who knew her.
