ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA – A tragic accident claimed the life of a Chalmette woman on Thursday night after she was struck by a vehicle while walking along Louisiana Highway 39. Authorities have identified the victim as 66-year-old Karen Joseph.
The Louisiana State Police responded to the scene near Plaza Drive around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, troopers found that Joseph had been hit by a Toyota Camry traveling in the right lane. Investigators determined that Joseph was walking north along the highway when she stepped into the car’s path in an area without a designated crosswalk.
Emergency responders rushed Joseph to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver of the Camry remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Officials have not yet confirmed whether impairment or speed played a role in the collision.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation, working to determine any additional factors that may have contributed to the accident. Authorities have not released further details regarding the driver or whether any charges may be filed.
Pedestrian safety remains a growing concern, particularly in areas where crosswalks and proper lighting are limited. Officials urge both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert, follow traffic laws, and exercise caution, especially when traveling near high-traffic roadways.
This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers pedestrians face when crossing roads without designated crossings. As the investigation continues, officials encourage the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety while walking or driving.
