DETROIT, MI — A man has been arrested in connection with a chilling triple homicide that has shaken the city. The bodies of a woman, her mother, and her 9-year-old daughter were found inside a burning vehicle on Detroit’s west side early Sunday morning, prompting a swift and intensive investigation by local authorities.
The victims were identified by family members as 9-year-old Ayva, her mother Kayda Sutton, and grandmother Sandra Davis. According to Detroit police, all three victims were killed before being placed in the vehicle and set on fire. Investigators say Kayda and Sandra were fatally shot, while young Ayva was stabbed to death in an act of brutal violence.
Authorities believe the suspect, who had previously been in a relationship with Kayda Sutton, committed the murders before transporting the bodies across town. The vehicle was discovered engulfed in flames around 5:50 a.m. near Milford and 30th Streets. After the fire was extinguished by the Detroit Fire Department, the three victims were found inside, badly burned and initially unrecognizable.
A subsequent investigation led police to a home on Detroit’s east side, where a warrant was executed. Officers discovered what they believe to be the original crime scene, along with a 4-year-old boy who had been left alone. He is related to the victims and is now in protective custody.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison spoke out about the horrific nature of the crime. “This case upset all of us — it shocked our community,” Bettison said. “Our detectives and the Michigan State Police worked tirelessly to ensure this individual was brought to justice.”
Police are continuing their investigation and have asked the public to come forward with any relevant information. A $5,000 reward is being offered for tips that lead to progress in the case. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak-Up or online at detroitrewardstv.com. Chief Bettison emphasized the department’s commitment: “We will be relentless in pursuing justice for this family. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this senseless tragedy.”
