The shooting happened around 3:19 p.m. on the 100 block of SW Water Street, near Peoria’s busy riverfront area. Wallenfang was critically injured and rushed to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center. Despite receiving emergency care and being admitted to the intensive care unit, her injuries were too severe. She was declared brain dead at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.
While details about the motive remain unknown, police confirmed that all individuals believed to be involved are in custody. No further information has been released about the suspects, and investigators are still working to piece together what led to the deadly shooting. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Peoria Police Department as the case remains active.
Wallenfang’s tragic death is not only a devastating loss but also a reminder of her compassion. She was a registered organ donor, and her family has decided to honor her wishes. Some of her organs will be donated to help others in need, offering hope and life in the midst of tragedy. Coroner Harwood confirmed that her organ donations will take place before an autopsy is performed.
The shocking event has deeply affected both the Pekin and Peoria communities. Friends and loved ones have described Wallenfang as a kind and bright young woman who had her whole future ahead of her. The shooting has sparked sadness and outrage, particularly because it occurred in a popular public area that is usually known for its safety and vibrancy.
As the investigation continues, community leaders are urging residents to stay united and work together to prevent further violence. While her death is heartbreaking, Wallenfang’s legacy lives on through the lives she will save. Her story is now a powerful reminder of the cost of gun violence—and of the lasting power of selfless acts in the face of loss.
