MECHANICSVILLE, MD — A tragic two-car crash in Mechanicsville on Friday afternoon has left one woman dead and two others, including a child, critically injured. The fatal accident happened in the 25000 block of Mechanicsville Road and remains under active investigation by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the scene shortly after the 911 call came in and discovered a devastating head-on collision between a 2018 Toyota Highlander and a 2013 Chrysler 200. The Toyota was being driven by 79-year-old Marjorie Swann Boyers of Mechanicsville. The Chrysler was operated by 31-year-old Megan Rowley, who had a juvenile passenger in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
According to preliminary reports, Boyers was traveling south on Mechanicsville Road when her SUV unexpectedly crossed the center line and entered the opposite lane. Her vehicle then collided head-on with Rowley’s car. The force of the impact left both vehicles severely damaged and all three individuals with serious injuries.
Tragically, Boyers was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical responders. Rowley and the juvenile passenger were rushed to a nearby trauma center for treatment. As of the latest update, both remain in critical condition, and their families are being notified and supported during this difficult time.
Investigators have ruled out speed and impairment as factors in the crash, but they are still working to understand what caused Boyers to veer into the wrong lane. Possible medical issues, driver distraction, or mechanical failure are being considered as potential causes. The Sheriff’s Office’s Crash Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation and is working to piece together the moments leading up to the crash.
Authorities are asking for the public’s help as the investigation continues. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information is urged to contact Corporal Vincent Pontorno at 301-475-4200, ext. 72343. Even small details could help determine the cause of the fatal collision.
