INDIANAPOLIS — A 57-year-old man died Thursday evening in a tragic accident involving a riding lawn mower on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The victim, identified as Michael Thomas Fledderman, lost his life when the lawn mower he was operating reportedly rolled over. The incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. on May 30 in a residential area near the intersection of Fall Creek and Lantern roads, just north of Fort Harrison State Park.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police responded to the 8800 block of Lantern Lane after receiving an emergency call about an accident. When officers arrived, they discovered Fledderman had suffered serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police quickly began a death investigation, and the area was secured while authorities examined the scene.
According to the Marion County Coroner’s Office, Fledderman died as a result of injuries caused by the rollover of a riding lawn mower. Officials did not provide information about how or why the mower tipped over. It is not yet clear whether the terrain, equipment malfunction, or other conditions played a role in the deadly accident.
The neighborhood, typically quiet and peaceful, was shaken by the sudden loss. Residents expressed their sorrow and remembered Fledderman as a friendly and hardworking man who took great care of his property. “It’s heartbreaking,” said one neighbor. “He was always outside working in the yard and would wave to everyone passing by.”
As of Friday morning, police and the coroner’s office were still investigating the cause of the accident. No further details have been released, and authorities have not confirmed whether anyone witnessed the incident. Investigators are expected to examine the mower and surrounding area for clues that may explain what went wrong.
Officials are using this tragic event to remind the public to take safety precautions when using riding mowers, especially on slopes or uneven ground. Following manufacturer instructions, wearing protective gear, and being aware of the surroundings can help prevent serious injuries or death. More updates will be shared as the investigation continues.
