According to the Hampton Police Division, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the Quality Inn on West Mercury Boulevard at approximately 12:09 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered a man and a woman suffering from serious gunshot wounds near the hotel entrance. Emergency crews from Hampton Fire and Rescue quickly transported both victims to a nearby hospital.
Sadly, around 2:20 a.m., the female victim succumbed to her injuries. On Thursday, police identified her as 24-year-old Monica Rodriguez of Newport News. The male victim, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized, but authorities have not provided an update on his condition.
Investigators say the shooting occurred while the victims were walking toward their hotel room.
