JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL — A Saturday evening tree removal project turned deadly when 45-year-old Pablo Nunez was fatally struck by a falling tree on his northern Jefferson County property. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed Nunez died at the scene despite rapid response from emergency crews.
The incident occurred around 6:10 p.m. on Neely Road, where authorities believe Nunez was attempting to fell the tree without professional assistance. Gardendale Fire and Rescue personnel arrived to find the victim pinned beneath the massive trunk, but lifesaving efforts proved unsuccessful. Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates pronounced Nunez dead at 6:28 p.m.
This marks the third fatal tree-cutting accident in Jefferson County since 2022, according to OSHA records. Forestry experts emphasize the hidden dangers of amateur tree felling, particularly the risk of “barber chair” splits where trunks shear unpredictably. Nunez’s death has prompted local arborists to offer free safety clinics for homeowners.
Neighbors described Nunez as a skilled handyman who frequently tackled home projects. “He was always helping others with repairs, but trees are different—they fight back,” said longtime resident Miguel Torres. The property remains taped off as sheriff’s investigators document the accident scene and examine Nunez’s equipment.
With spring storm season approaching, the Alabama Forestry Commission reminds residents that professional tree services carry insurance and specialized training. A GoFundMe has been established to support Nunez’s family, who declined to comment during funeral arrangements through Walker Chapel Funeral Home.
