A deadly crash on Wednesday evening claimed the life of a Marietta man on State Route 800 in Monroe County. The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the scene near milepost 21, where a single-vehicle accident had occurred. The victim was identified as 67-year-old Raymond C. Freeman.
According to investigators, Freeman had been driving a GMC Sierra southbound when the vehicle veered off the right side of the road for unknown reasons. The truck struck a tree with significant force, causing severe damage. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene due to the extent of his injuries.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. While alcohol is being considered as a potential contributing factor, confirmation is pending the results of toxicology testing. Officials will also examine other possible causes, including road conditions, vehicle issues, and distractions that may have led Freeman to lose control of the vehicle.
Freeman was reportedly wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, indicating he was following basic safety precautions. However, the violent impact with the tree proved fatal. No other vehicles were involved, and no passengers were in the truck. The rural stretch of State Route 800 where the crash occurred is known for its winding roads and limited lighting, which can pose risks to drivers, especially at night.
The St. Clairsville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. They are working to piece together the sequence of events and determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash. Officials are also asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information to contact their office as the investigation remains open.
Freeman’s death has left the Marietta community in mourning. Friends and neighbors have taken to social media to share condolences and memories of the longtime resident. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but loved ones are expected to gather in the coming days to honor his memory. As the investigation continues, law enforcement is reminding all drivers to stay alert, avoid distractions, and follow safety guidelines—especially on rural roads where hazards can appear quickly and unexpectedly.
