The Kentucky State Police (KSP) is investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Laurel County. The incident happened near the 900 block of North Laurel Road and resulted in the death of a 74-year-old man from London, Kentucky.
Troopers from KSP Post 11 in London were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a serious crash involving a moped and a passenger vehicle. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Ronald Bedley, 74, had suffered critical injuries in the collision. Bedley was quickly transported to St. Joseph Hospital in London, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to preliminary findings, both vehicles were heading northbound on North Laurel Road. The second vehicle, a Chevrolet driven by 67-year-old Darlene Maggard of McKee, had come to a stop in the road while waiting to make a left-hand turn. Investigators say Bedley, who was operating the moped, failed to stop and struck the rear of Maggard’s vehicle.
Officials noted that Bedley was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The lack of protective headgear may have contributed to the severity of his injuries. While Maggard was not hurt, the crash underscores the dangers faced by drivers of smaller, unprotected vehicles like mopeds.
No other injuries were reported, and the KSP has stated that there is no evidence to suggest that drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision. The crash appears to have been caused solely by Bedley’s failure to stop in time for the vehicle ahead of him.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. KSP has not announced any pending charges or citations and emphasized the importance of road safety, especially for operators of vulnerable vehicles. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly everyday travel can turn fatal, particularly for older adults and those using low-protection modes of transportation.
Troopers encourage all motorists to exercise caution, be aware of slower-moving vehicles, and always use safety gear, such as helmets, when riding mopeds or motorcycles.
