FABENS, TX – Authorities have identified the man who was struck and killed by a train over the weekend in Fabens. The fatal accident occurred around noon on Sunday near 17250 Alameda Avenue, where deputies responded and found the victim’s body on the north side of the railroad tracks. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, the victim has been identified as 24-year-old Salazar Samson Zenas of Uvalde, Texas. Witnesses, including the train engineer and an operator, reported that Zenas was walking westbound along the right side of the tracks while the train was traveling east. Despite multiple warnings from the train’s horn, he did not react or attempt to move out of the way.
Officials believe that Zenas may not have heard the approaching train because he was wearing a hoodie over his head and had headphones on. This tragic incident underscores the dangers of walking near railroad tracks, particularly when distractions such as headphones make it difficult to hear warning signals.
Railroad safety officials have long warned against walking along active train tracks, as trains cannot stop quickly to avoid collisions. They urge the public to stay alert and avoid using headphones or other distractions when near railways.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation, but no foul play is suspected at this time. Authorities continue to gather details and encourage anyone with additional information to come forward.
This devastating loss serves as a reminder of the importance of staying aware of one’s surroundings, especially near high-risk areas such as train tracks. Officials may release further updates as the investigation progresses.
