KALAMAZOO, Mich. — A woman who was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in Kalamazoo has been identified as 47-year-old Sariah Robinson, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS). Officers were dispatched to Woodward Avenue near West Paterson Street around 2:09 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Robinson suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital, but despite emergency medical efforts, she died from her injuries. KDPS extended condolences to her family, recognizing the deep pain caused by what they described as a senseless act of violence.
Witnesses at the scene told officers that the suspected shooter was a 55-year-old man who was known to Robinson. Authorities launched a search and located the man hours later on Lilac Lane near South Drake Road. As officers attempted to approach and speak with him, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot himself. He was taken to the hospital and remained in critical condition as of the latest report.
Although formal charges have not yet been filed, KDPS officials say they believe the shooting was an act of domestic violence. Executive Lieutenant Robert Holdwick called the incident “heartbreaking” and stressed its devastating impact. “This was a senseless and heartbreaking act of domestic violence that took the life of a mother,” he said. “Our thoughts are with Sariah’s family during this unimaginable time.”
The tragedy has rattled the Kalamazoo community and highlighted the urgent need for continued efforts to address domestic violence. Community members are being asked to come forward with any additional information that could assist the investigation. KDPS encourages anyone with relevant details to call its Criminal Investigations Division at 269-337-8139, or to provide anonymous tips through Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
As investigators continue piecing together the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting, friends and family are remembering Robinson as a devoted mother and community member. Her death adds to a growing list of domestic violence victims, leaving behind grieving loved ones and a community in search of answers. Authorities have vowed to pursue justice in the case and are urging the public to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting potential signs of domestic abuse.
