OMAHA, Neb. — A violent morning shooting in north Omaha has claimed the life of 15-year-old Shalamar Davis Jr. and left a 20-year-old man seriously injured. The Omaha Police Department responded to reports of gunfire near 51st and Emmet Streets around 10:28 a.m. Tuesday, locating both victims suffering from gunshot wounds near 52nd and Pinkney Streets.
Emergency crews rushed Davis, a Burke High School sophomore, to the hospital in extremely critical condition where he later died from his injuries. The unidentified 20-year-old victim remains hospitalized in serious condition. Omaha Public Schools confirmed Davis’ death in a letter to families, with Principal Darren Rasmussen expressing the school community’s grief over losing one of their students.
The shooting occurred just blocks from Burke High School during school hours, though officials confirm Davis was not on campus at the time. Crime scene investigators marked numerous shell casings at the location as detectives canvassed the residential neighborhood for witnesses and surveillance footage.
“This senseless violence cutting short a young life is absolutely tragic,” said Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer at an afternoon press conference. The department has not identified any suspects or established a motive, but investigators believe the shooting may have resulted from a dispute between individuals who knew each other.
Community leaders have organized a vigil for Wednesday evening at the shooting site to honor Davis’ memory. The young victim, remembered as a talented artist with a passion for basketball, leaves behind grieving classmates and family members.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Omaha Police Homicide Unit at 402-444-5656 or Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP. A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in this case.
