LONGVIEW, Texas — A Longview healthcare worker is facing criminal charges after allegedly tying a 55-year-old patient to a bed with leggings and leaving her restrained for five hours. Simone Monique Barnes, 34, was arrested Wednesday and charged with unlawful restraint following the disturbing incident at a local care facility.
According to police reports, Barnes admitted to restraining the vulnerable resident but claimed she was attempting to prevent falls. Investigators say Barnes then forgot about the bound patient and left work without releasing her. The woman was discovered by other staff members in visible distress.
Barnes remains in Gregg County Jail on a $40,000 bond. Court records reveal the healthcare worker had additional outstanding charges including marijuana possession and illegal weapon carrying unrelated to this incident. The arrest has divided the community, with some defending her intentions while others condemn the act as clear neglect.
Texas Health and Human Services has launched an investigation into the facility’s protocols. “Proper patient care should never involve unauthorized restraints,” stated Longview PD spokesperson Det. Mark Johnson. The victim’s family has retained legal counsel but declined public comment.
This case highlights growing concerns about elder care standards in Texas. State records show this marks the third restraint-related violation reported in Gregg County facilities this year alone. If convicted, Barnes faces up to one year in jail for the misdemeanor charge.
Authorities urge anyone with information about questionable care practices to contact the Texas abuse hotline. The investigation continues as officials review facility surveillance footage and staff records.
