
Charlotte, NC – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Sumer Massey earlier this month. Officials confirmed that 53-year-old Stevie Bernard Walker was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
The shooting occurred on March 1, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m. CMPD officers responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon on the 1200 block of Lucky Penny Street. When officers arrived, they found Massey suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics from MEDIC attempted to assist her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, authorities identified Walker as the suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he remains held without bond. Officials have not yet released any details regarding a possible motive or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Court records indicate that Walker has a prior criminal history, including a second-degree kidnapping conviction from 2006.
