
KANDIYOHI COUNTY, Minn. — A well-known member of the Willmar community died in a tragic crash involving a bicycle and a mini-van on Wednesday evening. Authorities have identified the victim as 54-year-old Timothy Cayler of Lake Lillian, who served as the Director of Music at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willmar. Cayler was also a former choir director for grades 6 through 8 at Willmar Public Schools.
According to the Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Department, the crash happened around 7:30 p.m. on 120th Avenue Southeast, near the town of Svea. Cayler was riding his bicycle when he entered the path of a mini-van that was attempting to pass him. The two collided, and Cayler suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. He was alone at the time of the crash.
The 59-year-old woman from Lake Lillian who was driving the mini-van has not yet been publicly identified. Authorities have not released further details about the cause of the collision or whether any charges are being considered. The incident remains under active investigation as deputies work to understand how the crash occurred.
Cayler’s death has deeply affected the Willmar community, where he was known not only for his musical talent but also for his dedication to education and faith. He led music programs at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and inspired many young students during his time with the public school system. His leadership in the arts left a lasting impression on hundreds of families over the years.
He is survived by his wife, Shannon Cayler, an educator with Willmar Public Schools, and their four sons. The family is currently making funeral arrangements through Harvey Anderson and Johnson Funeral Home in Willmar. Details about memorial services are expected to be announced soon. In the meantime, tributes have been pouring in from former students, fellow educators, and members of the church community.
