San Antonio, TX – Authorities have identified the driver who died in a collision with a North East Independent School District (NEISD) school bus on Tuesday evening. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that 54-year-old William Christopher Tutt lost his life in the crash. While his identity has been released, the exact cause of his death remains under investigation.
The accident occurred just after 5 p.m. on the 2400 block of Northeast Loop 410 near Starcrest Drive. According to law enforcement officials, Tutt was driving a sedan when he crashed into the rear of a stopped or slowing school bus. The impact was severe, with the front of Tutt’s car becoming lodged underneath the bus. Emergency responders arrived quickly but were unable to save him.
A witness identified as Jenkins described the horrific scene. “Somebody drove into the back of the bus. It looked like the bus was stopped, or they were stopping, and they just drove into the back of the bus. The whole front of the windshield is underneath it. That’s not a good sign. My thoughts and prayers to the family,” he said. The wreckage left the sedan crushed beneath the bus, highlighting the force of the impact.
At this time, authorities have not determined whether speed, impairment, or other factors played a role in the crash. Investigators are reviewing evidence, speaking with witnesses, and examining surveillance footage from the area. More details may be released as they work to understand what led to the tragic collision. Officials urge anyone with information to come forward.
NEISD confirmed that students were on the bus at the time of the accident but reassured the public that none were injured. The bus driver also escaped unharmed. The school district released a statement offering condolences to Tutt’s family and emphasized the importance of maintaining strict safety protocols for both students and staff.
As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Tutt and waits for answers regarding the circumstances of the crash. Authorities remain focused on uncovering what may have caused the fatal collision, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
